American painting first burst onto the world art scene in the 1950’s with energetic abstract paintings by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and others. They were followed by a generation of painters who toyed with irony, pop culture, and consumerism into the 2000’s. HPR’sNoeTanigawa reports on a show at the UH Art Gallery that heralds a rebirth of abstraction.

The Curators:
Debra Drexler is an artist and a professor of drawing and painting at the University of Hawai‘i at M?noa. Drexler maintains studios in both New York and O‘ahu. She has had twenty-eight solo exhibits and over one hundred group exhibitions at galleries and museums in New York, Hawai‘i, and internationally.
Liam Davis is an artist and curator living in Brooklyn, New York.
