Helping Hand - August 1, 2014 full interview with HUGS

Helping Hand is a weekly interview feature on HPR. Each Friday afternoon on HPR1 stations statewide at 5:30, Helping Hand offers a conversation focused on an organization or event in the community that offers assistance to the disabled and other folks in need. This week, with local All Things Considered host Dave Lawrence shares information about the group HUGS – Help, Understanding & Group Support -- volunteers trying to address issues families with seriously ill children face. We learn more about the event and the organization with our guest Joan Naguwa, Executive Director of HUGS.

There is an event to support HUGS this weekend - the annual Surf4HUGS at Kuhio beach is Saturday, August 2nd from 8 to 1, where HUGS children and their families will get to surf, canoe, and take part in other beach activities and a picnic lunch. According to their website, HUGS was founded in 1982 by volunteers trying to address them many issues that are part of the situation families face who have children with life-threatening medical realities. HUGS' mission was to establish an agency that would provide support, compassion and aloha to keep these families together. As an entirely community supported agency, they are funded through the Aloha United Way, fundraisers, grants, and generous donations throughout the years.
