Helping Hand - January 16, 2014 complete interview with Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai'i

Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations each week on Fridays at 5:30pm as part of All Things Considered, and online in our growing archive of Helping Hand segments here. Helping Hand tries to put the spotlight on an organization or event in the community that offers assistance to the disabled, the most vulnerable in the community, and other folks in need with ATC Local Host Dave Lawrence. This week we’re learning about Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Hawai‘i with some very special guests: Big Sister, Margaret, who is the mentor to Little Sister, Victoria, who has a truly remarkable story.

Since 1963, Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai'i has partnered with guardians, schools, corporations and others in the community to pair children (“Littles”) with carefully screened and trained volunteer mentors (“Bigs”). An affiliate of the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai'i mentoring programs have, as of July 2012, been serving children in all four counties through the unification of formerly independent Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies of Honolulu, of Maui, of Kaua'i and of Hawai'i County. Now statewide, they provide over 600 children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
