  A heated debate is getting hotter. It’s over a ballot question that asks whether or not we should amend the state constitution. The measure would give the state legislature the powerto tax investment property to fund public education. We talked with a group of UH professors who refer to themselves as the Hawaii Scholars for Education Social Justice, the Hawaii State Association of Counties, and the Grassroots Institute for their perspectives.

  Thousands of hotel workers walked off the job at Marriott properties across the country this week, Here in the islands picket lines are set up the Sheraton Waikiki, The Royal Hawaiian, Moana Surfrider, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, and the Sheraton Maui.

At a Tourism Summit, last week officials showed off “Sophia,” a humanoid robot who uses a form of artificial intelligence to replicate human social skills.

Jairus Grove is the Director of the Hawaii Research Center for Future Studies. He sat down with HPR’s Ryan Finnerty to talk about whether or not Sophia will really be able to replace flesh and blood humans.

Bamboo Ridge Press Gala

  Lois Ann Yamanaka broke through barriers with her book. Saturday Night at the Pahala Theater. It was one of 50 essential books recently chosen by Honolulu Magazine.

Yamanaka and other authors will read their works as part of agala event to mark the 40th anniversary of Bamboo Ridge Press on OCT 20th. The theme this year-- Not Pau Yet.
