Real action, right now - a coalition of affordable housing advocates are demanding that lawmakers at the Legislature approve funding for new builds and renovation of rental units. The organizations will rally at the capitol on Thursday to deliver a letter signed by over 60 members of Hawaii clergy. They want action this year in the form of appropriations in the Senate version of the budget. Catherine Graham is the co-chair of the Faith Action for Community Equity Housing Task Force and its Housing Now! Coalition.

Tour Connects Philippine and Renaissance Art: Christine Park

Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines began in the 16th century and lasted until the end of the nineteenth -- and connections there between the Old World and the New run deep. One that’s relatively unexplored is the strain of European Renaissance influence that runs through the art of the Philippines; one that’s deeply connected to the spread of Christianity to the New World. The Honolulu Museum of Art has created a new educational tour, free and open to the public, that explores the link between the art of the Philippines and the art of the Renaissance in Europe. Christine Park organized the tour with paintings and sculpture from the Samuel H. Kress Collection, and she’s with us this morning

Mark Twain was the embodiment of the writer as outsize personality, and few have ever handled the role as well.   He moved comfortably from the printed page into the creation of an affable, curmudgeonly (and world-famous) stage performer, his wit and his words as his calling card. So bringing him to life on stage is no small task, but it has been a lifelong pursuit for McAvoy Layne, who’s coming to Hawaii with a reimagining of Twain that drags him into a century for which he was not prepared.
