We are never immune from disasters, natural and manmade, and Hawaii’s isolation creates added challenges to any disaster response. In a disaster, much of the responsibility for keeping goods flowing among the islands would fall to Young Brothers, the interisland cargo company, whose President and CEO Joseph Boivin.

They are the construction tower cranes that dot the skyline when the construction industry booms and it’s a rare sight to have a woman in the cab anywhere in the country. There are only four female crane operators in Hawaii in a predominately-male dominated field. Pono Okimoto is one of them, a member of Operating Engineers #3 who is working her way up to break that glass ceiling

It was not a fitness goal when these women started. They are between 50-76 years old and just wanted to stay healthy. However, their coach Johnny Sarich who is from Canada inspired them. He holds a world record for hauling a wheelbarrow loaded with more than 8,000 pounds of bricks-- 243 feet. Under the guidance of Sarich and team leader Brenda Wong Yim this attempt to set a new record became a new fitness challenge.
