The Office of Language Access is hosting a one-day conference to determine how we can do a better job at serving those with limited English skills during natural and manmade disasters. The office was first created in 2007 to help serve a large cross section of immigrants throughout the islands. At present, almost 700 homes have been destroyed by the months-long Kilauea eruption. Many more have been abandoned due to unsafe conditions and lack of access. Some residents have been receiving payouts from their homeowners’ insurance to cover damage. But others are not so lucky. The Conversation’s Ryan Finnerty tells us about one couple who is suing their insurance company.
