Local Catholic Reaction to Pope’s US Visit: Darlene Dela Cruz

Pope Francis’ visit to the United States had an impact on the nation that went well beyond this country’s Roman Catholic community, and reminded us of the line a contemporary pontiff must navigate between progress and tradition. Although Francis has shown himself to be an activist Pope who is willing to challenge some of the Church’s longstanding practices, his visit included some sharp reminders that the Church is still, in many ways, a very traditional organization.   Darlene Dela Cruz, a reporter for the Hawaii Catholic Herald, was part of a Hawaii contingent that flew to Philadelphia last week to see the Pope, and she joined the show to share her takeaways.

Yoga is an ancient practice that is designed to help strengthen the body while improving breathing and focusing the mind. For anyone who has ever done it, they know that it’s not as easy as it may seem. But not all yoga techniques are the same. Iyengar yoga is a particular discipline that focuses on certain techniques, sequences, and timing that is different from other forms of yoga. Ray Madigan from Iyengar Yoga Honolulu joined the show in-studio to tell us more about this unique type of yoga available right here in the islands.

In an interview for our week-long series on homelessness, Maui Mayor Alan Arawaka made it clear he saw no value in the so-called “housing first” option, saying the building of a new dwelling would be meaningless without support services the Department of Health should provide. It’s a point of view many of the mainland and local activists disagree with, as do members of the Maui County Council. Councilmember Stacy Crivello joined the show via phone from Maui to comment.
