Classical Pacific, April 25, 2018: Orchestras of the Pacific Rim 3

This week I'm featuring some of the many Pacific Rim Symphony Orchestras. So far you've heard music from the San Francisco and Seattle Symphony Orchestras. Today, we travel south and West to hear music of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, which had several early incarnations and became permanent in 1946. The orchestra is  a crown entity, owned by the government of New Zealand. It's home is in Wellington, and the orchestra regularly tours to Auckland, Christchurch and other sites within New Zealand. Conductors of note have included Franz-Paul Decker, James Judd, Pietari Inkinen and current music director Edo de Waart, who began his tenure in 2016. I'll be playing performances led by resident and guest conductors, including the music of Max Reger, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Mihlós Rósza, Felix Mendelssohn, Frederick Delius, Samuel Barber and Randall Thompson.

While you're at it, don't miss a performance by our own Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra. There's no comparison between a recording of an orchestra and the experience of hearing an orchestra live. This weekend, esteemed conductor Leonard Slatkin will be conducting the orchestra in both Pops and Masterworks concerts.

Friday, April 27, 7:30pm, Leonard Slatkin conducts the music of John WIlliams.

April 28 and April 29, Leonard Slatkin conducts Cindy Mc Tee's Finish Line; the Sibelius Violin Concerto, with Elina Välhälä, Violin; and Brahms Second Symphony.

For tickets, call 94 MUSIC (946-8742). Box office hours, M - F, 8:30am - 4:30pm.
