Two fatal stabbings in four months have happened at one of Hawai`i’s public housing complexes. Each incident involved non-residents. Residents say the current security system is severely lacking and more needs to be done to protect them from violent visitors and brawls that end in death.

Hawai`i received a Race To The Top report card last week from the U.S. Department of Education and it’s not looking good. State Department of Education officials traveled to D.C. to discuss what needs to be done to keep 75 million dollars in Hawai`i’s public schools. It’s been one year since Maui County restricted use of plastic bags. Kauai followed and the Hawai`i County council made a similar recommendation last year. With the legislative session gearing up, advocates are pushing for a statewide law to bring O`ahu into the mix and deal with some unforeseen problems the plastic bag bans created. The goal is to reduce waste and costs for businesses, and maybe even make the state some money.
