In celebration of National Nurse Week – we’re taking a look at a nursing program that’s working towards bringing diversity to the medical field. It’s lifting many Native Hawaiian students out of poverty…and onto a path toward nursing. HPR’s Molly Solomon reports.

This is graduation time for everybody from kindergarten to college.  Hawaii Community College designs some of their end of year ceremonies for both East Hawaii and West Hawaii students to be uniquely Hawaiian.  HPR's Sherry Bracken was at the West Hawaii ceremony and tells us more.

John Tanji Koga has received the Honolulu Museum’s Catharine E.B. Cox Award for Excellence in Visual Arts. Best known as a sculptor and general promoter for art projects throughout the community, Koga’s current show features paintings that relate directly to Hawai’i’s legacy of visual art. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports.

Undulation: rise and fall, recent work by John Tanji Koga, is on view at the Honolulu Museum of Art through this Sunday, May 12th. Find links and an extended interview with Koga including a marketing suggestion for artists.

Melbourne, Australia’s Mojo Jacket is today’s 5:30 interview feature on All Things Considered. They recently opened for Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band across Australia. The group is based around brothers Rick and Ben Fumi, and also includes drummer Benny Stivala. In speaking with HPR's Dave Lawrence, the brothers shared their unique family connection to music, as Ben explains.

The State Legislature adjourned its 60-day session today, following passage of a state budget and less than 10 percent of the bills that were originally introduced. HPR’s Wayne Yoshioka reports.

According to the EPA, food waste is now the biggest contributor to our country’s landfills. Every year, as much as 40% of our food ends up in the trash. But, as HPR’s Molly Solomon reports, a local project is taking steps to ensure that excess produce gets to the people who need it the most.
