Nearly 40 years ago, a 22-year old artist decided to document the changing landscape of Honolulu's most famous neighborhood...Waikiki. That artist was local photographer Eric Yanagi. Thanks to a state grant, Yanagi completed the year-long project in 1973.

Volunteers Observe Whales for Annual 'Count'

Volunteers will be counting humpback whales today from 8 am to noon at more than 60 sites on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island. It marks the first “sanctuary count” of the season.
Event coordinator Christine Brammer says whales come and go from January to March. The population peaks next month.
