Award-winning slack key guitarist Jeff Peterson visited Hawai`i Public Radio to talk with host Derrick Malama about his latest release, “Slack Key Travels.” Jeff brought two of his guitars with him and played a few songs from the album in the HPR studios. Robert Cazimero of the legendary Brothers Cazimero has a new solo release out called "Hula 2," in which he plays piano and sings classic hula songs, as well as his own compositions. HPR’s Derrick Malama asked Robert about a passage he wrote in the liner notes for his album.

The Hawai`i Island band Kahulanui draws its inspiration from Hawaiian Swing music orchestras of the 1920s and 30s. The band's debut album is called "Hula Ku`i." Leader Lolena Naipo Jr. stopped by HPR recently along with fellow members Patrick Eskildsen and Jesse Snyder. Derrick Malama asked Naipo why he chose to revive the sounds of that bygone era.

Award-winning singer-songwriter Kuana Torres Kahele co-founded the Hawaiian music group Na Palapalai. He stopped by HPR's Atherton Performing Arts Studio to talk story and play music from his solo release "Kaunaloa." Kahele told Derrick Malama his inspiration for one song on the album was a trip to Paris.

Hilo resident Mark Yamanaka recently visited HPR's Atherton Studio to talk story and play songs from his recently-released debut album, "Lei Pua Kenikeni." He told host Derrick Malama that his recording of Nani Ka Honua was written by his mentor, famed Kumu Hula Johnny Lum Ho.

Legendary singer, songwriter, and slack key guitar master Keola Beamer and Grammy Award-nominee Raiatea Helm have recorded their first album together, entitled Keola Beamer and Raiatea. They're preparing for a concert tour of the islands next month and recently sat down with our own Derrick Malama in HPR's Atherton Studio. Grammy Award-winning guitarist Jeff Peterson has two unique concerts coming up. One--later this month--traces the orgins of the guitar from its roots in the Arab world to today's Hawaiian slack key. And the other--on Sunday--reunites Peterson with shakuhachi Grandmaster Riley Lee. Peterson recently brought his slack key guitar to our studios where HPR's Derrick Malama asked him about the first concert with Lee. For her first Hawaiian music album, Kainani Kahaunaele won 3 Hoku Awards. After 7 years, she's back with her much anticipated sophomore release, Ohai Ula. She recently stopped by our studios with her producer, Shawn Pimental, to "talk story" and play songs from the new album. HPR's Derrick Malama asked Kainani - who wrote most of the songs - about her inspiration for the first track on the CD, Eia Ke Aloha.

The 2010 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, Hawaii's version of the Grammys, were handed out last night in the Hawaii Convention Center. Maui's Uluwehi Guerrero came away with two trophies for his release "Uluwehi Sings Na Mele Hula Aloha," including Hawaiian Album of the Year and Best Liner Notes. HPR's Derrick Malama recently spoke with the Kumu Hula about the creative process that went into putting together his album of mostly falsetto music. Hawaiian music legend Eddie Kamae's latest CD is called "Yesterday and Today Volume 2." It features classic songs recorded with The Sons of Hawaii in the 1970's, as well as new music produced with the group's latest lineup.
