Saturday May 25, 2013 - Chris Vandercook
In his seventh annual concert for Hawaii Public Radio, singer–guitarist Chris Vandercook and his band take a stroll through the many shadings of the blues in a concert he calls “Blues - the Common Ground.” Vandercook blends his guitar style, which descends from past heroes like Magic Sam and Freddy King, with the distinctive “soul-jazz” sound of the Hammond organ and tenor saxophone, buoyed by a contemporary bass-and-drums rhythm section. The music ranges from jazz-inflected tunes by Stanley Turrentine and Kenny Burrell to songs by soul legend Sam Cooke and songwriter John Hiatt. Band originals are part of the mix as well, including a new tune that marries blues stylings to James Brown-style syncopation.

Saturday June 1, 2013 - Mango Season
Mango Season’s evening in HPR’s Atherton Studio at 7:30 pm on Saturday, June 1st will feature the premiere performance of the group’s debut album entitled “Flying Home.” The Kickstarter-funded album is an exploration of Annie and Curt’s journey home to Hawaii, and the sun-kissed island soul jazz music that was born of their travels and stories. The evening will include the live performance of their album - 9 original new works, 5 cover songs including a jazz-infused take on a classic Hawaiian hula, a beautiful rendition of a Princess Likelike mele, and 5 different languages - as well as performances by guest artists featured on the album.

Friday, June 14th - Bruce Brubaker: “Plugged and Unplugged: Bruce Brubaker Plays New American Piano Music" -- featuring recent music by Nico Muhly, "the planet's hottest composer" (according to London's Daily Telegraph), Philip Glass, and Missy Mazzoli. A leader in what's sometimes called "alternative classical," pianist Bruce Brubaker is chair of the piano department at the renowned New England Conservatory in Boston. He performs Mozart with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Brahms on the BBC. He plays music by Philip Glass throughout the world. He's appeared at the Hollywood Bowl and Leipzig's Gewandhaus. Saturday June 22, 2013 - Roz Cohen..."Klezmer, Cabaret, and All That Jazz"

Roz Cohen is a sultry, sassy songstress, bringing her unique talent and humor in song interpretation and live entertainment to HPR’s Atherton Studio. Professionally singing, dancing, and acting from a young age, Roz has performed along the East Coast in nightclubs, dinner theaters, and professional stages, including Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Her sidemen in the Atherton will be jazz virtuousos Josh Kaye on piano and the Big Island’s own Bill Noble on reeds and winds. As Roz sings comfortably in French, Yiddish, and English, she can transport you to Piaf’s Paris, Brice’s Borsht Belt, the New York Broadway stage, and the San Francisco cabaret scene. Roz and her colleagues are sure to delight you with an evening of “Klezmer, Cabaret, and All That Jazz.”

Saturday June 29, 2013 - Island Oasis Ensemble

For anyone who thinks the Atherton has pretty much explored every kind of music or dance, the upcoming debut of The Island Oasis Ensemble is a definite groundbreaker. It will feature belly dancers Masayo and Kalae, accompanied by live music. The new style of Tribal Fusion, a development that combines traditional dance styles with hip-hop, breakdance and other new moves, will be presented along with traditional styles.

The Island Oasis Ensemble was formed two years ago to support local belly dancers wanting to perform with live music. The Ensemble’s repertoire includes classic Egyptian selections (such as Aziza and Tamr Henna), Turkish, Armenian, Persian and Roma folk music, as well as original pieces in the modern Tribal Fusion style.
