Improvements on Tsunami Damage at Keauhou Bay Underway

Two years ago Keauhou Bay was slammed by the tsunami.  Waves in the bay destroyed, among other things, three commercial properties at Keauhou Pier.  Now, only one of those businesses is back in operation.  HPR's Sherry Bracken talked to the commercial operators and to the property's owner, and has the story.

Kona Village Resort Still Recovering from 2011 Japan Tsunami

Two years ago, a brutal tsunami ripped through northern Japan.  That same wave damaged parts of the Big Island. While downtown Kailua Village has returned to normal, other areas have not made it all the way back.  That includes a resort north of Kailua Kona.  HPR's Sherry Bracken has an update on recovery issues.

Keck Observatory Celebrates 20 Years

One of the most noteworthy telescopes atop Mauna Kea is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.  There are several events on the Big Island--from a scientific conference to fundraisers to a free open house.  From Hawaii Island, HPR's Sherry Bracken tells us more.

Halema'uma'u Volcanic Gas, 5 Year Anniversary

Kilauea Volcano is marking more than one anniversary this year.  January was the 30th anniversary of the East Rift Zone Eruption.  And this month, it is five years since the main Kilauea Crater started erupting after a pause of 45 years.  From the Big Island, HPR's Sherry Bracken tells us more.

Governor Abercrombie on Hawaii Island

Governor Abercrombie spent part of the day Wednesday on the Big Island.  He talked with residents about several issues of local concern--including the plans for the oft-discussed Honokohau Harbor.  HPR's Sherry Bracken was there and has this report.
