Tonight at the Blaisdell Arena, the Summer Soul Fest is taking place. Last week we spoke with the headliners, The Stylistics. This week we continue with a conversation with two more acts: The Shirelles' Beverly Lee and The Crystals' DeeDee Kenniebrew. These two girl group pioneers told HPR's Dave Lawrence stories that stretched back to a very different era.
This Saturday night The Crystal Method returns. The popular group broke onto radio in the late 90’s via a hit collaborative remake with the band Filter, and has pushed the limits of EDM – Electronic Dance Music – since. Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland called HPR's Dave Lawrence to talk prior to their trip to Hawai`i, and discussed how radio factors into their background.
Longtime island favorites The Stylistics are returning as part of the Summer Soul Fest at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu. Original vocalist Airrion Love spoke with HPR’s Dave Lawrence ahead of their visit.
The Beach Boys are celebrating fifty years of music through a reunion album and tour with founder Brian Wilson. That’s Why God Made The Radio is the album, and he spoke with HPR’s Dave Lawrence about it during a break in their world tour.
Next month the first annual Hawai`i Record Fair will happen at McKinley High School. While there will be plenty of records, it’s a lot more than a strictly-vinyl affair, as we learned when HPR’s Dave Lawrence spoke with one of the event presenters, Dennie Chong of Hungry Ear Records Kailua.
