Oahu's central plain is still growing - with several new developments adding to a current population around 44-thousand. `Ewa Beach, closeset to the water, has golf courses and developments springing up around it and the stretch closest to the ocean along `Ewa Beach Road is a community in transition. HPR's Noe Tanigawa offers another in a series of Island community portraits.
Among the many fine offerings emerging in print this year, one standout is Talking Hawai`i's Story, a volume of recollections from Hawai`i's Center for Oral History. Colorful stories illuminate lives and times that reconstruct a foundation for the future in these Islands. HPR's Noe Tanigawa talked with an 88-year-old contributor, beginning with her early years on Hawai`i Island.
Talking Hawai`i's Story: Oral Histories of an Island People includes memories of Lana`i, wartime Hawai`i, old Waikiki and much more. The collection was edited by Michi Kodama-Nishimoto, Warren Nishimoto and Cynthia Oshiro of the Center for Oral History at U.H. Manoa. The collection is a U.H. Press publication available at bookstores around the islands.
Honolulu offers some tempting sanctuaries amidst the bustle of the season, for example the exhibition of "Hokusai's Summit: Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. This exhibit includes orginals fo familiar favorites including the "Red Fuji" and "Great Wave Off Kanagawa" that continue to influence artists today. HPR's Noe Tanigawa visited the Academy for this report.
"Hokusai's Summit: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" continues through January 3 at the Honolulu academy of Arts. "Six Cinematic Views of Japan" continue through December 31 at the Academy's Doris Duke Theatre.
According to a new survey of Hawai`i non-profits, nearly two-thirds have cut staff, over half have reduced programs, and a third have cut services and salaries in the current economic downturn. Arts sector non-profits are struggling too, but an expert in the field is coming to town with, perhaps, some eye-opening advice. Michael Kaiser had a successful business career before he earned his nickname, the "Turnaround King," by rescuing the American Ballet Theatre and London's Royal Opera House, among others, from the brink of insolvency. Now, as President of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Kaiser is travelling the country to share his insights. HPR's Noe Tanigawa asked what kind of feedback he is hearing.
All are invited to the free "Conversation with Michael Kaiser," Wednesday, December 16, at the Mission Memorial Auditorium near Honolulu Hale. He will also speak on Maui, December 17, at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. His appearances include question and answer sessions with the audience and details from his book, The Art of the Turnaround. Call or check hawaiiartsalliance.org for tickets.
Note from Noe: On December 16th, 2009, Michael Kaiser gave a presentation to assembled artists and arts leaders in Honolulu. Here is the complete presentation including Mayor Mufi Hanneman's opening remarks about the City's commitment to art, a one and a half hour mp3. The content is different from the HPR interview, which I recommend as a pithy entrée to his mana'o.
On a night full of stars, in a shepherd's village near Bethlehem, a boy and his mother become part of an unfolding miracle. That basic story was set to music as the world's first opera for television, and in the 50 plus years since its debut, "Amahl and the Night Visitors" has become a holiday favorite. HPR's Noe Tanigawa offers this preview of a new production by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth and the Hawai`i Opera Theatre.
"Amahl and the Night Visitors," a joint production by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth and the Hawai`i Opera Theatre, opens tonight at 7:30 at Tenney Theatre. Performances continue the following three Saturdays at 4:30 pm. For information or tickets call HTY or check htyweb.org.
