Originally from northern Virginia, Joan grew up playing piano and cello. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1974. As a Smithsonian-Peace Corps Volunteer in Palau, she worked as a field botanist and taught piano and other instruments. After earning a Ph.D. in Plant Ecology at UH in 1986, Joan worked for The Nature Conservancy and US Department of the Interior in Honolulu and Washington, DC. She is an Affiliate Graduate Faculty in UH Manoa's Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology Program.  She has served on the Hawaii State Legacy Land Conservation Commission since 2007, and is a director of the Honolulu Chamber Music Series and the Maui Classical Music Festival.

Joan Canfield has been a member of HPR since 1981. Before taking over the reins of Evening Concert in 2006, she was the host of Early Morning Classics and co-host of Great Songs with Gary Hickling.

Joan's second career as classical host has opened up a new avenue of learning and enjoyment in sharing musical gems and curios with HPR listeners.
