Whither Contemporary Art at The Honolulu Museum?

A year ago, the Honolulu Academy of Arts and the Contemporary Museum merged and a new director was hired to head what is now the Honolulu Museum of Art. What do these changes mean for contemporary art and artists here? HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports.

The Biennial of Hawai‘i Artists X continues through July 22 in Makiki at Spalding House, the former Contemporary Museum. Last night, Mayumi Oda opened new works at the Museum on Beretania street, and the popular Schaeffer Portrait Challenge has just opened at First Hawaiian Bank downtown. The invited artists in the Biennial of Hawai‘i Artists X are Mary Babcock, Solomon Enos, Jianjie Ji, Jaisy Hanlon, Sally Lundburg, and Bruna Stude. Each artist has been provided with gallery space to show a body of several works or create an installation at Spalding House.
