In Hawai`i, funk and dance music of the seventies and eighties is popular stuff. Right now, funksters Kool and The Gang are bringing their classic sounds to a whole different gang of folks: fans of Van Halen, reunited and touring with David Lee Roth. HPR’s Dave Lawrence connected with Robert "Kool" Bell ahead of the tour opener in Louisville.
The Van Halen / Kool and The Gang tour continues through June 26 in New Orleans. Get dates and more details at van-halen.com and koolandthegang.com. Below hear the complete advance interview with Kool, and see some fan shot video from the tour. Next month we'll feature a check-in from the tour to hear how it's going, and in May, venture to the mainland to see them live and record a conversation in-person.
Our North Shore and Kaua'i signals are off-the-air; HECO will be restoring power to the site on Friday. All other transmitters are operating normally.
