Big waves continue to batter the Hawaii coastline, creating hazardous conditions for beachgoers. Dangerous surf can put inexperienced swimmers at risk of injury or even death. The National Weather Service is taking new steps to make sure people realize just how dangerous high surf can be.

Michael Cantin is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Honolulu. He explains how the updated messaging system puts a greater emphasis on getting out the right information. By telling the public what to expect, they’ll be able to make better choices.
