Internationally celebrated oceanographer, Dr. Sylvia Earle, says “The economy is a wholly owned subsidiary of the environment.” Gulf coast fishermen and others fully agree, as do a growing number of scientists, planners, and private companies seeking to work with natural systems to enhance human life. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa visits one of Maui’s Four Great Waters to get an idea of how ancient Hawaiians understood that relationship.
