There are contra dance communities in just about every college town across the country including here, in Honolulu and in Hilo. Pop up contra dance events happen on Kaua'i and Maui too. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa found that it’s a spirited form of couples dancing where you will likely dance with everyone in the room.
“Contra Dancers of Hawai’I” dance the first and third Saturday of each month at KCC— no experience needed and it’s always free.
KGB will play for a contra dance Saturday, February 5th from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The contra dance will be held at Kapi’olani Community College Chapel on Diamond Head Rd. The caller for the dance is Eric Anderson from California. Anderson will teach each dance, so no experience is necessary. Beginners are welcome. KGB will lead a musician workshop on Saturday, February 5th from 1 to 3 pm at the Church of the Crossroads on University Ave. They will teach style and technique to all interested musicians. A $20 donation is suggested for the workshop.
A KGB concert performance will be held on Friday, February 4th at 7:30 p.m. Call Jackie at 735-8012 or Larry at 732-7717 for more information.
KGB will offer a workshop Saturday afternoon February 5th and a small concert
