Today the Army is shutting down regular operations to focus everyone’s attention on a “silent enemy”. The stand down day will train soldiers of all ranks in preventing suicide, the Army’s fastest growing threat, and military leaders are asking for everyone’s help.
With more visitors and more residents across the
Hawaiian Islands there are also more people hiking. That also means more
search and rescue missions for hikers who are lost, injured or otherwise in distress.

Women
at the state’s only female prison recently
filled the courtyard beyond their cells with laughter, deeply personal stories,
songs and tears. It’s part of a project called the Prison Monologues and the women
are speaking at schools and conferences around the state.

Several hundred new apartment rentals are under
construction statewide. The units will increase affordable housing options for
low-income residents, but according to the state’s housing study tens of thousands of additional affordable rentals are needed.
